02.08.13 Thoughts on the “Online Teaching” MOOC

I’ve been analyzing a number of MOOC’s and enrolled in the “Fundamentals of Online Teaching” MOOC. It was a bit of a train wreck. Debbie Morrison outlines a good analysis of some of the problems in “The MOOC Honeymoon is Over: Three Takeaways from the Coursera Calamity” (http://onlinelearninginsights.wordpress.com/2013/02/05/the-mooc-honeymoon-is-over-three-takeaways-from-the-coursera-calamity/ )

I particularly agree with her second point that “ Sound instructional design is the key to supporting self-directed learning experiences.” Yes. Good references and a link to Steven Downes Facilitating a Massive Open Online Course (2012).

01.11.13. Assessment – Multiple Choice Testing

Good ideas on multiple choice testing and assessment in general. I’ve always liked the idea of “open book” tests and having students condense notes to one page, and hand it in, makes sense. Having students submit sample questions is also a great idea. More good ideas in the comment section too. Check out the article at:

01.12.13. eTip – “The Wisdom Wall”

In this video (below), Michelle Pacansky-Brock talks about how she sets up a “Wisdom Wall” to help students get comfortable in her course. The “Wisdom Wall” is where students at the end of the semester leave comments and tips for the incoming students. Great idea. Here’s the link to the video:
